We are delighted to welcome Yu Ōshima, former Nadeshiko League player, as a special guest instructor for an Indigo Dyeing Workshop at Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya on Sunday, November 2, 2025. This unique event offers the chance to experience one of Japan’s most treasured traditional dyeing techniques in the heart of Shibuya.

Indigo Dyeing: A Moment of Reflection in the Diverse Spirit of Shibuya
Indigo dyeing, or aizome, is one of Japan’s most iconic traditional crafts. The deep blue, known as JAPAN BLUE, is celebrated worldwide as a symbol of Japanese identity. No two pieces are ever alike—each fold, twist, and shade reflects the individuality and inner expression of the maker.

Just as Shibuya is ever-evolving and diverse, the spontaneity of indigo dyeing mirrors the city’s dynamic spirit. Take home not only a beautifully hand-dyed creation but also a one-of-a-kind cultural memory of Shibuya. A Workshop by Yu Ōshima × Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya: Sharing Diversity and Tradition through JAPAN BLUE
During the event, you’ll dye natural fabrics such as tenugui hand towels using traditional indigo. With folding, twisting, and tying techniques, you can freely create patterns that bring out your individuality. This hands-on workshop brings together traditional culture, fashion, and Shibuya’s celebration of diversity.

Participation Fee: ¥4,500 (tax included, materials provided)
*Guests may bring their own fabric to dye, though the fee remains the same.

About Yu Ōshima CEO, Suiten Ippeki Co., Ltd. Tourism Fellow, Shibuya City Tourism Association A former player in the Nadeshiko League, Japan’s top women’s soccer league, Yu Ōshima transitioned to living as a transgender man after retirement and medical treatment. He later lived in Australia, where he experienced a society deeply rooted in DE&I (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), an experience that profoundly shaped his values. Today, through Suiten Ippeki Co., Ltd., he conducts lectures, training sessions, workshops, and advisory roles for companies, local governments, and schools. His work aims to soften the invisible barriers between people and between people and the world, creating opportunities for a society where differences resonate and coexist harmoniously. A message from Yu Ōshima: Indigo isn’t just one shade—it holds countless expressions of blue. People are the same: we all carry differences yet create a shared landscape together. In this workshop, I hope you discover your own unique blue and enjoy the harmony of this space.
